About the event
Madeira is a remarkable destination for fern enthusiasts. Its mild climate, dramatic landscapes, lush valleys and exceptional botanical diversity support a fascinating range of native and introduced ferns. From the shaded, moisture-rich paths alongside its famous levadas to its celebrated botanical gardens, the island offers a wealth of opportunities for botanical exploration.
The Exotic Fern Group is inviting members to meet for three days of informal botanical exploration on Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 February 2027. This is an opportunity to explore contrasting habitats together, share knowledge and develop fern identification skills, drawing on the experience of members already familiar with the island.
Proposed programme
Tuesday 23 February – Botanical gardens
An opportunity to visit Jardim Tropical Monte Palace and Jardim Botânico da Madeira together, exploring extensive collections of cultivated plants, including a variety of ferns.
Wednesday 24 February – Low-altitude levada walk
